Colds and Symptoms
About colds
The common cold is one of the most frequently occurring medical conditions. 90% of colds are caused by viruses1. The common cold is highly infectious and can be spread very easily as the virus is airborne. It is spread mainly from contact with saliva or nasal secretions of an infected person through coughing and sneezing, or from contaminated surfaces which they have come into contact with.
Adults can suffer from between 2 to 4 colds per year2, and because of their weaker immunity, children tend to be affected even more, suffering up to 10 colds per year2. Given the ease of transmission through coughing and sneezing, the entire family could be at risk.
The immune system protects the body against invasion of viruses and bacteria. Unfortunately, the immune system can be compromised by a number of factors such as physical stress and poor diet. When the immune system is weaker, people can become more susceptible to colds.
Symptoms
The most common symptoms of a common cold include runny nose, sore throat, blocked nose, sneezing, coughing and tiredness or muscle ache. If symptoms persist seek medical advice.
